My Leap into Monster High Repainting

So for the last few months I've been accumulating all the things I need to begin repainting my many Monster High Dolls. If you don't know about MH repaints or haven't seen them I highly suggest you look up some pictures-- because wow. Some people are so amazingly talented it makes me sick.

Pinterest, Tumblr, and DeviantArt are all great places to search if you want to spend hours staring at beautiful (and sometimes disturbing) MH repaints.

My brother in law had mentioned to me that some folks like to repaint their dolls. I didn't give it much thought at the time, but at some point I stumbled across them or looked them up and now I am obsessed. So obsessed, by golly, I wanted to try to make my own! My art skills aren't exactly superb (I'd say mediocre at best) but there is one thing I can draw and that's eyes. In art class that was my most favorite thing to draw. And with MH repaints the eyes are pretty much the most important part. So I spent the money to get all my supplies, waited about a month for my Mr. Super Clear to arrive from China and I've finally started repainting!

Here are my results so far:

.... It was a Disney day.

So some thoughts on them:

The first one is my first attempt. I think she turned out really well. I didn't have any kind of plan for her. Just that I wanted her colors to be blue and purple and that I wanted her to be happy and sweet. Which I think I pulled off. I still need to get gloss so I can gloss her lips and I'm thinking I may give her some more freckles. Because I desperately love freckles on MH repaints. I'm fighting back the urge to give every one of my repaints freckles because I love them so.

Anywho, I think she'll be a water nymph or something. I've been thinking about what sort of clothes she'll wear, but really I kind of like her being naked. Too much clothes would be obnoxious if you're swimming all the time anyway. I dunno. I might give her some seaweed and seashell coverings of some sort. Or maybe I'll just give her lots of scales or something. I dunno yet.

The second doll is my OC Tomi. She is going to be a kitsune shrine maiden. I have a whole backstory for her which I'll probably write up into a blog post at some point. She's very sweet but also really feisty and mischievous. Not that you'd be able to tell that from the faceup I gave her. It really didn't turn out at all how I planned it. I wanted her to give off a sweet and mischievous look but it just looks super innocent. And though I really like the idea of her having two colored eyes, it just didn't turn out how I thought it would. I am definitely going to redo her. I think I'll just go with golden eyes this time with a smirk and side glancing eyes. Hopefully my second attempt will turn out better than my first.

I did try repainting a third doll, but she did not turn out well at all. I wanted her to be sad and melancholy looking but she looked like she was stoned or something. After getting some advice from my artsy friends (who are far more talented than I) I think I'll give it another go. Really the third one was a test to see if I could pull off the right kind of eyes for my other OC Arabella Rose. She's a melancholy ghost. Hopefully this next attempt will be a success and I'll have more confidence to try repainting Arabella.

Speaking of my dear Arabella, here are some photos of her that I took. I made her little nightgown and removed some of her original faceup. I left the eyes for now because I want to make sure I can draw the eyes I want her to have before removing her original eyes.

I love her very much. Which is why I want to make sure to do her justice and give her proper eyes and not make her look dopey.

Well I think that's about all I have this time. I hope you guys enjoyed this post! There will probably be more like it in the future!

Until next time!
